Grand Folk Railroad

Grand Folk Railroad brings on the fun with a quirky, eclectic/eccentric mix of forgotten favorites, 60-70's pop gems, one hit wonders, old-school-country, contemporary folk and the inspiring songwriting of lead singer Susan Schwartz-Christian. With a make-every-note-count approach to performing, a vast eclectic repertoire and questionable regard for musical traditions, Grand Folk Railroad blurs the lines between pop, rock, folk and singer/songwriter genres.

Grand Folk Railroad brings on the fun with a quirky, eclectic/eccentric mix of forgotten favorites, 60-70’s pop gems, one hit wonders, old-school-country, contemporary folk and the inspiring songwriting of lead singer Susan Schwartz-Christian. With a make-every-note-count approach to performing, a vast eclectic repertoire and questionable regard for musical traditions, Grand Folk Railroad blurs the lines between pop, rock, folk and singer/songwriter genres. Like her band mates, lead singer/songwriter Susan Schwartz-Christian is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who switches seamlessly from guitar to banjo to flute. But when it comes to pinning down a style and genre, her songwriting isn’t easy to classify. With a big voice that’s deeply rooted in old school country, you might expect honky-tonk inspired tales of love and loss. But there’s an edge and a sense of sophistication that quickly become apparent as the stories and melodies in Susan’s finely-crafted songs reveal themselves. By combining these elements, Susan has developed a songwriting style that is unique, compelling and that transcends what listeners expect from a singer/songwriter. Her bandmates include guitarist Frank Doris; an accomplished musician who knows how to take a good song to the next level with beautifully melodic touches and the ability to bring on the burn when needed. A guitar player since the year after the Summer of Love, Frank has played in a variety of bands and diverse situations, including an opening slot for Duran Duran on their first-ever U.S. tour. Keyboardist Gary Schoenberger brings a broad palette of rich textures and new sounds to the band. And with equal expertise as a guitarist and singer, Gary takes GFR in a slightly different direction with an eclectic repertoire of roots music, contemporary folk and bluegrass tunes. Rounding out the lineup is drummer/bassist Mike Christian, who also serves as the band’s arranger and Susan’s sometimes co-writer. A disciple of 60’s and 70’s pop music and, in particular, the lesser known artists from this era, Mike is responsible for filling out the band’s repertoire with the hidden gems, lost classics and one-hit-wonders from this era.
